Tuscany & Rome, a luxury small-group tour

Ten days of Italian countryside, food and history — by balloon, vintage Fiat, e-bike and kayak, with five-star hotels every night.

This 10-day Italy tour moves at the pace of the Tuscan countryside. From Rome we climb to the cliff-top town of Orvieto, then settle into a five-star estate in the Chianti hills. From there we drive vintage Fiat 500s to medieval San Gimignano, spend an afternoon in Renaissance Florence, float over the vineyards in a hot air balloon and cook alongside Tuscan winemakers. The journey ends south of Rome, with the hot springs of Saturnia, kayaks on Lake Albano, a Shabbat dinner with Rome’s ancient Jewish community and a farewell meal in the Castelli Romani.

Day 01 - Rome – Orvieto – Castelfalfi

From Rome to a hilltop in Umbria

We land in Rome and head north by private coach. Orvieto, perched on its volcanic cliff, gives us a first taste of Italy at its most dramatic: a gothic cathedral facade of gold and marble, and a hidden city of Etruscan caves carved beneath the streets.

Please book your flight to arrive at Rome Fiumicino (FCO) in the morning — the coach departs for Orvieto from the airport.

  1. MORNING Arrival at Rome Fiumicino, private coach to Orvieto
  2. MIDDAY Orvieto Cathedral and the Orvieto Underground; lunch of handmade pasta with Orvieto Classico
  3. DINNER Welcome dinner of local flavors at the resort
  4. STAY Castelfalfi Resort ★★★★★, Chianti Hills

Day 02 - Tuscan countryside – San Gimignano

A vintage Fiat 500 road trip

After a short briefing we take the wheel of classic Fiat 500s and follow cypress-lined back roads through the Tuscan hills. The road leads to San Gimignano, the medieval “town of towers,” for a wander through its lanes and views across the valley.

  1. MORNING Self-drive vintage Fiat 500 tour of the Tuscan countryside
  2. MIDDAY San Gimignano old town; lunch of traditional Tuscan dishes
  3. DINNER Your pick of the resort’s restaurants — menus shared in advance
  4. STAY Castelfalfi Resort ★★★★★, Chianti Hills

Day 03 - Riobuti Waterfalls – Florence

Forest waterfalls & Renaissance Florence

A quiet morning beside the Riobuti Waterfalls, deep in the Tuscan woods. In the afternoon we trade forest paths for Florence: the food stalls of Mercato Centrale, Piazza della Signoria and the goldsmiths of Ponte Vecchio, then free time for the Uffizi or the Accademia.

  1. MORNING Nature walk at the Riobuti Waterfalls
  2. AFTERNOON Guided Florence walking tour, free time for museums
  3. DINNER Tuscan dinner at Castelfalfi
  4. STAY Castelfalfi Resort ★★★★★, Chianti Hills

Day 04 - Chianti

Sunrise over Chianti by hot air balloon

An early start for the highlight of the trip — a hot air balloon flight over the vineyards, olive groves and stone villages of Chianti, finished with an aperitivo on landing. The rest of the day is unhurried.

Balloon flights are weather-dependent. If conditions don’t allow a safe flight, we’ll reschedule within the week.

  1. MORNING Hot air balloon flight and landing aperitivo
  2. AFTERNOON Three-course trattoria lunch; vineyard tour or spa time at the resort
  3. DINNER Three-course dinner paired with Tuscan wines
  4. STAY Castelfalfi Resort ★★★★★, Chianti Hills

Day 05 - Castelfalfi

E-bikes through the estate

With a local guide we ride e-bikes across Castelfalfi’s 1,100-hectare estate — gentle climbs, wide views and no sore legs — before stopping for local cheeses and a glass of prosecco. The afternoon is free.

  1. MORNING Guided e-bike ride and countryside trek; cheese & prosecco aperitivo
  2. AFTERNOON Three-course lunch; free time for walks, wine or the spa
  3. DINNER Seasonal Tuscan menu with local wines
  4. STAY Castelfalfi Resort ★★★★★, Chianti Hills

Day 06 - Radda in Chianti

Cooking & wine in Radda

At a family winery in Radda in Chianti we roll up our sleeves for a Tuscan cooking class — panzanella, fresh pasta, cured meats — then sit down to eat what we made alongside a tasting of the estate’s Chianti Classico.

  1. MORNING Winery visit, cooking class and wine tasting
  2. AFTERNOON Lunch of the dishes we cooked; return to the resort
  3. DINNER Seasonal Tuscan dishes at Castelfalfi
  4. STAY Castelfalfi Resort ★★★★★, Chianti Hills

Day 07 - Saturnia – Castel Gandolfo

Thermal springs & a lakeside kitchen

Heading south, we stop to soak in the warm sulfur cascades of Saturnia. By afternoon we reach Castel Gandolfo above Lake Albano, where the chefs of Antico Pagnanelli teach us the cooking of the Roman hills.

  1. MORNING Saturnia thermal springs
  2. AFTERNOON Check in at Castel Gandolfo; cooking class at Antico Pagnanelli
  3. DINNER The meal we prepared, overlooking Lake Albano
  4. STAY 5★ hotel in Castel Gandolfo

Day 08 - Lake Albano – Rome

Kayaks, then Shabbat in Rome

A calm morning on the water of the volcanic Lake Albano. In the evening we join Rome’s Jewish community — one of the oldest in the world — for Kabbalat Shabbat and dinner hosted in a family home.

Before you go

Who is this Italy tour for?

Travelers who want Tuscany beyond the postcards — active days (e-bikes, kayaks, a balloon flight) balanced with long lunches, cooking classes and five-star rest. No special fitness is needed; every activity is guided and paced for the group.

What should I pack?

Light, quick-drying clothes, a warm layer for evenings and a light rain jacket. Sun protection for skin and lips, a hat, comfortable walking shoes with good grip, a refillable water bottle and a European plug adapter.

Cash or card in Italy?

Italy uses the euro. Credit cards and ATMs are widely available, but carry some cash for coffee, drinks and souvenirs — debit cards often aren’t accepted for small purchases.

What’s the weather in mid-June?

Early summer in central Italy is warm and sunny: around 18–31°C (64–88°F). Mornings in the Chianti hills are fresh, and Rome is the hottest stop — sunscreen is a must.
